CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Lake Charles offers events including Wayne Toups performing at Jellystone RV Park on Saturday and an MMA fight with American Kombat Alliance at the Golden Nugget on March 7. Rick Springfield will perform at L'Auberge Casino Resort on Sunday — McNeese Athletics host baseball beginning Friday.  Gator 99.5
  • Scotty Schadler marks two years on Gator 99.5 today, sharing how he balanced an early morning radio show with his engineering job + community ties. He thanks local fans and colleagues for their ongoing support and for making every broadcast special.  Gator 99.5
  • Travis Tritt, a famous country singer, will perform in Lake Charles on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Golden Nuggets Grand Event Center at 8:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday (Mar. 6) at 10:00 a.m.  Gator 99.5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today the Agricultural commissioner warned that federal immigration caps are causing a labor shortage in the local crawfish industry, and some producers worry that global conflict may further reduce available workers.  7 KPLC

  • More than 300 students visited SOWELA Technical Community College today for the second annual criminal justice day, where they experienced K-9 demos, SWAT operations, and a State Police helicopter landing (applications for law enforcement positions are open).  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Larry Johnson broke a 44-year-old record to become McNeese's top freshman scorer, earning his second Southland Conference Player of the Week award, while the Cowboys and Cowgirls will rest ahead of tournaments, with the Cowboys set to tip off Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. + the Cowgirls beginning soon after.  The American Press
  • During Tuesday’s regional round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs, several Southwest Louisiana boys basketball teams suffered narrow losses in closely contested games while six teams, including Washington-Marion, St. Louis Catholic, Lake Arthur, Lacassine, Hathaway, and Singer, advanced to the quarterfinals.  The American Press
