COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A tour of Southwest Louisiana Black-owned businesses is set to launch soon and will offer local residents a chance to learn about culture and new ventures. The event will visit key spots in the region (schedule details pending).  7 KPLC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local farmer Paul Habetz said crawfish season began slow but is now shaping up thanks to high demand during Lent — shops are preparing to supply seafood Fridays. The season is expected to be productive as families look forward to enjoying mudbugs.  7 KPLC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Crawfish season has begun and KPLC will update weekly prices for boiled and live crawfish in Lake Charles, with rates ranging from $4.25 to $9.99 per pound; residents can email KPLC to include their favorite listings.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following a ruling by the federal court that sided against the ACLU, Louisiana public schools started posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms on Friday, Feb. 20. Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office sent out guidance (including constitutional poster examples) to help schools comply with the law.  7 KPLC
  • Louisiana’s Department of Health announced that SNAP participants can no longer use benefits to buy soft drinks, energy drinks, or candy (pilot aims to encourage healthier options) starting Wednesday, Feb. 25.  The American Press
  • A $15 million renovation of West Sallier Street is set to begin in 60 days and take 18 months, expanding the roadway from Marine Street to Lake Street and adding drainage, new water and wastewater systems, plus a 10-foot walking and biking trail that will connect to a citywide plan.  7 KPLC

HEALTH NEWS

  • LDH launched Project M.O.M. (Maternal Overdose Mortality Project) to help hospitals reduce opioid overdose deaths in pregnant women, working with Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women. The program aims to cut deaths by 80% over the next three years and lessen the stigma around addiction.  7 KPLC
  • A follow-up inspection on Feb. 11 confirmed downtown Wendy’s is now rodent-free after management hired pest control and began remodeling—no rodent droppings were found in the food area.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU rallied from a late deficit to beat Indiana 14 to 7 in the Liv Like Lou Jax College Baseball Classic on Friday as Zach Yorke's 3 run homer sparked a 9 run eighth inning and the Tigers came back after trailing for the first time this season.  The American Press
  • McNeese State faces Texas A&M Corpus Christi at Townsley Law Arena today at 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU as the Cowboys aim to secure the #2 seed in the Southland Conference tournament in a nationally televised match.  Gator 99.5
  • Freshman Malayna Daigle hit her first college home run — a game-winning grand slam — in McNeese’s 5 to 3 win over Missouri on Friday, Feb. 20 at Joe Miller Park. The hit broke a tie in the bottom of the sixth as Cowgirls rallied twice to secure their fifth win.  The American Press
  • On Thursday, local girls and boys high school basketball teams competed in bi-district playoffs, with Sulphur defeating Barbe 49-27 and other schools posting key stats across divisions. The report published Friday highlighted scores and standout performances from Divisions I to Class C.  The American Press
