ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A DeQuincy native was one of six people killed when a business jet crashed in Maine during a snowstorm over the weekend, and her loss touches family and friends in the Southwest Louisiana community.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lake Charles hosts the Southwest District Livestock Show and Rodeo today through Saturday at the Burton Complex with a parade and four rodeo events. Sammy Kershaw will perform live at Golden Nugget Friday (8:30 p.m.) while the Cajun Rodeo Association holds events in Sulphur Friday and Saturday.  Gator 99.5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese Visual Arts students host the annual Gumbowl fundraiser Friday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shearman Fine Arts Annex Atrium — $20 tickets offer chicken and sausage or seafood gumbo with a handmade ceramic bowl, and proceeds help local ceramics students attend a national conference.  The American Press

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is stocking community ponds statewide with seasonal fish through its Get Out & Fish Program, a move announced Jan. 28 to help boost local fishing spots.  7 KPLC

  • The Cowgirls begin a new Southland Conference stretch today as they play defending champion Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum before facing Lamar on Saturday in Beaumont. Coach Ayla Guzzardo said the team will rely on strong defense + timely scoring to secure wins.  The American Press
  • The Sulphur Lady Tors are on an 8-game winning streak with a 14-5 record as senior center Presley Gunter (and her sister Sianna) drive a collective team effort, and they will face the Sam Houston Lady Broncos next with head coach Matt LeBato expecting more strong play.  7 KPLC
  • Saints QB Tyler Shough, after nine starts this season, is set to compete for Offensive Rookie of the Year at NFL Honors next Thursday (where Saints legend Drew Brees may also be honored) and he says his focus remains on team growth.  7 KPLC
  • St. Louis Catholic beat rival Barbe 3-0 at Cowgirl Field on Tuesday as Sophomore Ty Pousson scored twice and Senior Tucker Williams added a goal to extend the winning streak to six games.
