COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Utility crews are working 16-hour shifts to restore power after the weekend ice storm left many residents in Vernon Parish without electricity. Full power restoration is expected by 10 p.m. today across southwest Louisiana.  7 KPLC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State officials announced that two more deaths linked to extreme cold are under investigation (one in a mobile home and one in an apartment), possibly raising the storm death toll to five; residents are advised to use the 76 warming centers open statewide for safe shelter tonight.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Despite freezing temperatures, local residents attended a preview of the Mardi Gras Chicken and Pig Run yesterday in Lake Charles, where organizers showcased what to expect from upcoming Mardi Gras celebrations.  7 KPLC
  • This Is Home Fest 2026 returns on April 18th in downtown Lake Charles, featuring live music on two stages and starting with Barbe Show Choir at noon — the nonprofit event brings together local favorites and well-known acts for a day of family-friendly fun.  Gator 99.5
  • Local musician Dani LaCour released a six-song EP titled In My Rearview over the weekend, featuring tracks such as Pot and the Kettle and My Broken Heart. She began her solo career in 2015 + now performs at local venues across Southwest Louisiana.  Gator 99.5

  • Jeff Davis and Beauregard schools, along with Sowela Technical Community College’s Lake Charles and Jennings campuses, reopen today while the Leesville site stays closed due to weather (Dillion Disposal has delayed its routes by one day).  The American Press

  • City officials will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. in the City Council Chambers to review Mardi Gras parade logistics that include port-a-can placements (guidelines, parking restrictions, and barricade setups) affecting business operations along the parade routes.  The American Press

  • Counselor Joel Daugherty advises residents to combat seasonal depression today by getting early morning sunlight and Vitamin D supplements while keeping a steady routine (988 hotline is available for additional help).  7 KPLC
  • A 6 year old girl from Sulphur died Sunday after battling a rare brain tumor. A celebration of her life is scheduled for Saturday (Jan. 31) at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church Hall.  7 KPLC
