- ➤ Louisiana Grass Roots, a short documentary about our region’s forgotten prairie lands, will screen at the Strand Theatre on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. Admission is free and a Q&A session will follow. The American Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Former lawmaker Richard Nelson began serving as president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System on Jan. 1 and will tour its 12 colleges over the next two weeks. He says more state funding is needed to support rising enrollments and prepare for $80 billion in upcoming projects. The Advocate
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ At G.I. Joe’s Gym in Moss Bluff, power lifters showcased strength at today's Armlifting USA bench press competition. Spencer Payne bench pressed 530 pounds for runner up honors and Jerry Mason pressed 450 pounds for third place while the winner earned a $500 prize (local enthusiasts joined the event). 7 KPLC
- ➤ The Cowboys will face the Islanders today (3 p.m.) in Corpus Christi, Texas as they seek to rebound from a 79 to 76 loss, with head coach Bill Armstrong stressing the need to overcome slow road starts. The American Press
