  • Camp Corral is hosting its 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, April 27 at Koasati Pines (300 Koasati Drive in Kinder) to raise funds for a summer camp for children of disabled or wounded veterans.  7 KPLC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Verizon service disruptions have left customers in Lake Charles with unreliable phone & internet connections. The outage began around 11 a.m. yesterday and teams are working to restore service.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southwest Louisiana celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with a series of events starting Jan. 16. A memorial breakfast at L’Auberge Casino Resort and a music honors night on Opelousas will be held before Jan. 19's parade, vendor market and gumbo cookoff at the Lake Charles Event Center.  7 KPLC
  • The Christian Youth Theater will present Junie B. Jones The Musical at the F.G. Bulber Auditorium on the McNeese campus this weekend. Tickets are available online or at the door for performance times on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.  The American Press
  • A review of traditional Cajun Mardi Gras songs highlights classics with accordions and fiddles that keep local customs alive in small Cajun towns. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Advocates for early childhood education urged lawmakers to restore funds after a $9 million cut left 720 Pre-K seats unfilled; Libbie Sonnier (CEO of the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children) said more funding is needed before the legislative session begins March 9.  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Johnny Lacombe has donated blood since 1987 and given 191 units as donations dropped from 50 to about 5 units per drive, health officials say. LifeShare will host a donation event on Jan. 22 and 23 at 214 Dr. Michael Debakey Drive where donors get a free king cake.  7 KPLC

  • McNeese State’s Cowgirls start their three-game road swing tonight at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. and will play Rio-Grande Valley on Saturday as they look to extend their win streak using quick defense + smart turnovers.  The American Press
